Poetry Corner with Ivy and Friends: Poet of the day Donald Armfield
Tell us a little bit about yourself, Donald.
I'm avid reader of all genres. My favorites are dark fiction, weird or experimental. I started writing for all to see in 2011. Since then I've been published in over three dozen anthologies and zines. I have two novellas and a novelette, as well as two poetry collections and two short story collections coming in 2018. I live with a wonderful wife and four daughters and I'm really good at putting the toilet seat down.
What inspires you to write poetry?
My inspiration came from what I read. I came across the style "Free Verse" and was pulled in . I usually just let my mind take over and write what falls out.
When people read your poetry, what is it that you would like or hope they understand about you through your words?
I would just like to hear what they think. I'd love to see my poems picked apart; (like when we were in school looking over Robert Frost poetry) My subjects usually hide in the darkness with emotion and vivid imagery.
POETRY BY DONALD ARMFIELD
When do I awake? by Donald Armfield
They're out there,
I can feel them
hear their footsteps....
shh!
Disguising their true form.
As dark shadows
along the walls.
They stop
& stare.
I always rush inside,
right before they take
a third step.
Just wait with me.....
Let them
pass though us,
please?
I have a feeling
that's what
they wanna do.
I need to see this....
So I can finally wake up.
Swim Food by Donald Armfield
Come with me, its right around this corner
to the top of this hill, down the slope
to water below.
I hope you can swim,
because you can't see a damn
in these waters.
Its a murky mess,
like an oil spill,
blinding the angry dwellers.
They are feisty now
we are like frog food
as we try and tread water.
Whats pulling at my feet
this fear of drowning.
Why did you follow me?
OH September, by Donald Armfield
The weather getting colder
but bring colors
to the grounds we walk.
The spooksters are counting
the remaining days
to Halloween, remember?
My favorite holiday.
But you know what September?
Those two days,
that you took back.
those everlasting nightmare
keep them,
I didn't like them anyways.
Mom its been six years
but we never forget
the colors you've spread
with my brother beside you,
holding him tight.
Is how we are
holding those memories
you gave us
right beside our hearts.
September,
you can take away the loved ones
but the memories
will never fall
or change colors.
THE POETS FAVORITE POEM
Poet Donald Armfield was asked to share one of his favorite poems and here is what shared. What is it about, Yusef Komunyakaa's poetry, that makes him your favorite poet?
I have tons of favorite poems from many different poets. One of my overall favorites is Yusef Komunyakaa's work with translation on Gilgamesh. All his poetry is full of dream imagery, odd behavior, war and jazz music or even mythological twists. "Lost in the Bone Wheel Factory" and "I apologize for the Eyes in my Head", are some two collections I highly recommend. "The Heart's Graveyard Shift" is one of my favorite poems by him.
THANK YOU!
I would like to Thank Poet Donald Armfield for sharing his amazing poetry with all of us. I've had the privilege of reading his poetry book the Jagermeister Walker and I must say it had a variation of poetry that sparked many different emotions. No one poem is the same. Donald, it's been great being a fan and following your poetry journey. Your words have meaning and I always look forward to reading more. May you continue to write from the depths within you and bring us more to read.
