Poetry Corner with Ivy and Friends: Poet of the day Alistair Stone
GETTING TO KNOW THE POET
Tell us a little bit about yourself, Alistair.
A little about myself...haha...I'm an English, competitive, boxing, fitness freak, endurance triathlete, stiff upper lip gentleman in real life, who believes in kindness, respect, empathy and compassion. And I also don't really like talking about myself...this is the first time. And I try not to take myself too seriously...except when I'm training and wearing gloves. I don't mind pain but let's not be silly.
What inspires you to write poetry?
I've been writing for about three years now, it isn't something that I perceived myself doing. I'm sure I'm the same as most people that wake up at 3am on a regular basis and have jumbled up mess running riot insider their mind. I just started to write those thoughts down and i enjoyed it as a release. I found that if I didn't they would just rattle around inside for days.
When people read your poetry, what is it that you would like or hope they understand about you through your words?
I don't really write for recognition and some of my pieces that I'm most proud of are quite dark and are about subjects that people sometimes feel uncomfortable talking about. Having said that I've written about subjects ranging from suicide to the short life of a banana, from the loneliness a lamppost feels to self harm and abuse.
It's quite nice to feel that someone else feels a little less lonely or isolated after reading something you've written, even if it makes a few people uncomfortable along the way, if there's just one person that takes a bit of comfort or opens up and talks to a friend then I'm pleased. I don't believe any subject should be off limits to discuss as I'm quite empathetic and open to new ideas and viewpoints, why wouldn't you be?.

Poet Alistair Stone was asked to share one of his favorite poems and he chose to share The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. Here is why
What is it about, The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, that makes it your favorite poem?
I love poetry from the two world wars, the ability to take the reader to the trenches and smell the fear, tragedy and brutal violence of war, yet somehow use language that brings some peace to awful situations and make the reader question mans motives on such a large scale is an amazing talent, I have such respect for anyone that sees beauty in the face of evil.
However I have to say my favourite poet has to be Poe, I remember first reading Raven and loving the rhythm of his words and connecting to the frustration and madness that he depicted. We all fight demons at some stage of our lives, but Poes honesty at such a time when mental illness carried such harsh consequences was quite courageous.
